iPhone 17 Price Hike Expected: Impact of New US Tariffs & Apple's Strategy

Published: March 20, 2025

The recent tariff changes implemented by the Trump administration on Chinese imports will directly impact Apple product prices globally. These changes will affect not just the US market but also countries like India where iPhones are sold.

Understanding the New Tariff Impact

Apple currently manufactures 90% of its products in China, 7-8% in India, and 2-3% in Vietnam. The new 34% additional tariff (on top of existing 20%) makes Chinese imports to US 54% more expensive.

Here's a simple example - an iPhone that cost $100 to manufacture in China will now cost $154 when exported to US. If the same iPhone is manufactured in India, the export cost would be $126. This gives India some advantage as a manufacturing hub.

Apple's Limited Options

Apple essentially has two choices:

  • Pass the extra cost to customers (making iPhones more expensive)
  • Absorb the cost themselves (reducing profit margins)

Given that Apple's revenue has been stagnant or declining for past 4 years, they will likely increase prices.

iPhone 17 Series: What's Changing?

Model Lineup Changes

iPhone 15+ and 16+ models accounted for only 9% and 7% of sales respectively, leading Apple to discontinue the Plus model. It will be replaced by iPhone 17 Air with ultra-thin design.

Design and Build Materials

iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max will get design changes while regular 17 maintains previous design. All models will switch to aluminum frames - even Pro models losing stainless steel.

iPhone 17 Air will feature titanium frame for strength in its thin design and to justify its premium $900 price tag.

Display Improvements

Entire iPhone 17 lineup will get 120Hz ProMotion displays. However, Apple may limit 120Hz to UI animations only, keeping gaming and scrolling at 60Hz (citing battery savings).

Camera System Upgrades

iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max will upgrade telephoto lens from 12MP to 48MP. All models will get improved 24MP front cameras.

Performance Enhancements

iPhone 17 and 17 Pro will get A19 and A19 Pro chips respectively. iPhone 17 Air will have reduced GPU cores to prevent overheating in thin design. Pro models may get vapor cooling chambers.

Impact on Indian Market

Since US is Apple's largest market (35% revenue), they may increase prices in smaller markets like India first. This means iPhone 17 series could be significantly more expensive in India compared to previous models.

Conclusion: New US tariffs and Apple's manufacturing changes will likely make iPhone 17 series more expensive globally. The lineup brings design changes, display upgrades and camera improvements. Indian consumers should prepare for higher prices while getting some new features in return.
