3D Printing Chaos: How Bamboo Labs' Update Broke My Setup (And What You Should Use Instead!)

Optimizing Your 3D Printing Setup: Challenges and Alternatives

Introduction

Up until about two weeks ago, my 3D printing setup at home was frankly embarrassing. Determined to improve, I sprang into action. I picked up a rack, finally treated myself to a filament dryer, and got everything organized. I was excited to show it off, only to have Bamboo Labs issue an update that, in the name of security, significantly harmed the functionality of their printers for many users.

Getting into 3D Printing

I still want to talk about what it's been like getting into this hobby a little later than most. There have been some pitfalls, especially in a house where kids are often the users. This was one of the big reasons I chose a Bamboo printer in the first place. However, now that they're altering the deal, I think we need to expand the scope and look at not just my 3D printing setup but maybe some alternatives from other members of our team.

Bamboo Labs: Pros and Cons

One thing that impresses me most about our Bamboo setup is the incredible quality of these multicolored prints. The AMS system takes something that would have been incredibly complicated years ago and makes it so simple that a child can use it. However, I don't agree with Bamboo's assertion that setup can be done in 15 minutes. It took us a little longer, but definitely less than an hour.

Once set up, the Bamboo app has pretty much everything you need: a live view of the build plate, machine status monitoring, meaningful error messages, support contact, and a model library. The kids love the model library, which they use as a personal toy manufacturing device.

Challenges and Solutions

Despite the ease of use, there are challenges. For instance, managing desiccant packets in the AMS or filament storage can be a hassle. Too much moisture from the air in your filament will jam up your system. This is where a filament dryer becomes a lifesaver. Even brand-new rolls of filament can jam the machine, but throwing them in the dryer solves the issue.

Another issue is the lack of an access hatch for filament fragments, which can be a nuisance. However, these problems don't happen often, especially with a filament dryer in place.

Exploring Alternatives

Given the recent issues with Bamboo Labs, it's worth exploring alternative setups. For instance, the Prusa Mark 4S is a reliable option. It's a freaking rockstar and comes with an enclosure in its newer version, the Core One. Prusa printers are known for their upgradability, which is a big plus.

Another alternative is the Eligo Saturn 4 Ultra, a resin printer that offers incredible detail. Resin printers are great for super accurate prints, though they require more post-processing, including washing and curing the prints.

Conclusion

3D printing has come a long way, making it accessible even to kids. However, it's essential to be aware of the challenges and have the right tools, like a filament dryer, to ensure a smooth experience. While Bamboo Labs has made significant strides, recent updates have made it harder to recommend. Exploring alternatives like Prusa and resin printers can offer more reliable and versatile options for your 3D printing needs.
